Under specific supervision, the Preventative Maintenance Mechanic performs prescribed preventative maintenance on heating, ventilation and air conditioning equipment, machinery and component parts. 

  • Repairs and maintains machinery and mechanical equipment in accordance with diagrams, sketches, operating manuals, manufactures specifications or supervisors instructions.
  • Lubricates and cleans pumps, meters, fans, machinery, equipment and operating hardware;
  • Monitor building automation system to identify potential issues and make adjustments;
  • Replaces gaskets, belts and seals on equipment;
  • Repairs to electrical and plumbing systems associated with heating and air conditioning;
  • Responds to after-hours calls;
  • Performs preventative maintenance on heat pumps, portable generators, boilers and water softeners;
  • Inspects machinery in operation to assure proper functioning, including checking pressures and temperatures;
  • Considered essential personnel - which means this position may be needed at times when the University is closed or in an emergency situation as determined by supervisor;
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

40%  Perform preventative maintenance on equipment;

15%  Repairs to electrical and plumbing systems;

15%  Maintain heating and cooling systems;

15%  Monitor building automation system and make adjustments;

10%  Trouble-shoot mechanical problems;

5%   Other duties as assigned.

  1. Knowledge of heating, ventilation and air-conditioning machinery and components.
  2. Sound mechanical judgment and a working knowledge of general construction principles.
  3. Computer skills and technical knowledge to navigate the automation system and implement corrections.
  4. Ability to read and interpret blueprints and systems diagrams.
  5. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with members of campus community.
  6. Ability to work overtime to respond to emergencies.
  7. Ability to work all shifts or weekends when necessary.
  8. Must be willing to seek training to enhance or learn new skills.
  9. Solid of plumbing, electrical and heating systems to analyze problems.
  10. Ability to drive a personal or university vehicle for the purpose of university business on a regular basis.

The functions of the position usually performed standing. Some amount of stooping, kneeling, bending, crouching, heavy lifting, climbing ladders, walking, carrying and other movements may be required.  Mechanics must be able to work in steam tunnels, pits, and crawl spaces. The mechanic must be able to work from ladders, scaffolds and staging. Under special circumstances, protective equipment and garb may be required. Tasks involving preventative maintenance mechanic work involve extensive wrist and hand movement. All individuals are required to be able to perform these movements without significant risk of injury to themselves or others, or to otherwise demonstrate or explain how they can perform the essential functions listed above.

  1. High school diploma and trade or vocational training required, otherwise, any combination of education equivalent to graduation from high school or other combination of education, training and experience that proves the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities.
  2. General mechanical aptitude and three years experience as a mechanic performing similar work.
  3. Valid NYS driver's license required.  License must meeting insurance company rules and regulations for driving underwriting criteria.
