Under general supervision from the Controller the Accountant will be a critical part of the Finance department in the monthly, quarterly and annual tasks that are necessary for accurate and timely financial reporting that will include journal entries, reconciliations, ledger maintenance, variance reporting, due to/from transaction development and review.  Also assisting the Controller in ensuring internal control procedures are adhered to.


  • Enter transactions on a daily basis into Colleague system covering all general ledger accounts.
  • Assist with University’s quarterly sales tax reporting.
  • Posting of Journal Entries and other transactions to the General Ledger such as cash receipts.
  • Develop internal control policies and procedures and ensure they are being adhered to.
  • Assisting accounts payable and purchasing with vouching invoices as they relate to charging the appropriate general ledger account.
  • Monthly reconciliations - covering all balance sheet accounts.
  • Reconciliation of all fixed assets and capital expenditures along with roll forward reporting.
  • Creating a control process that includes tagging all assets purchased by the University with non-removable tags that include an identifying number and the NU logo.
  • Calculating depreciation expenses and posting them to the general ledger. 
  • Responding to general ledger questions within and outside of the finance department.
  • Assist with quarterly and year end audits.
  • Assist with the monthly reporting of budget to actual performance reports including answering department head questions.
  • Other duties as assigned

  1. Demonstrated knowledge of financial and accounting processes including budgeting, financial reporting, etc. Demonstrated experience with strategic data analysis, financial modeling and budget preparation.
  2. Knowledge of computer software including IBM compatible desktop computers with Excel, Word and integrated accounting systems software. Experience with Ellucian, Colleagus is a plus. Working knowledge of the internet.
  3. Excellent communication skills with the proven ability to communicate effectively both in writing and verbally.  Ability to establish and maintain excellent customer service.
  4.  Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize projects and tasks.

The functions of the position are usually performed sitting, but may require some amount of standing. Some amount of stooping, kneeling, bending, crouching, lifting, walking, carrying and other movements may be required. Tasks involving working on a computer keyboard, calculator, involves extensive wrist and hand movements. The employee is regularly required to lift up to 10 pounds. The vision requirements include close vision, distance vision and the ability to adjust focus. All individuals are required to be able to perform these movements without significant risk of injury to themselves or others. 


  1. Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics.  A CPA certificate or an MBA degree is preferred.
  2. Two or more years of experience in accounting, in Higher Education is preferred.
  3. Knowledge of accounting systems and software is essential, in Higher Education is preferred.
